Our Beneficiaries
All our beneficiaries are excited to go through Orientation & Mobility training to allow them the freedom to go to places they once thought impossible. Most lost their sight later in life, and so had immense problem adjusting.
Our aim is to provide Guide Dogs to as many of our beneficiaries as possible. However, they must all first undergo O&M training to equip them with general mobility skills. This is to ensure they are mobile enough to justify using a Guide Dog. Guide Dogs are a mobility aid that helps in daily travel. They are only needed if the user travels.
Thus, O&M training programme is the keystone of our organization. After 3 months of O&M training, our beneficiaries will be assessed by a qualified assessor for their eligibility for a Guide Dog. Those who qualify are given further training to use Guide Dogs.
Our O&M specialist will identify between three to five potential Guide Dog users annually. The assessment and selection criteria are stringent to ensure the client and family members are able to provide a safe and conducive environment for the Guide Dog, and allow our beneficiaries to benefit fully from a Guide Dog.
