Getting a Guide Dog
Getting a Guide Dog requires training specifically in using a Guide Dog. This can only be done once the person who wants a Guide Dog has the Orientation & Mobility skills deemed necessary by the qualified assessor.
The instructor will assess some of the following:
- The person’s independence (can they get from point A to point B safely)
- Whether the person’s family accept the Guide Dog, and if the person’s home environment will be conducive to it.
- Whether there is a need for a dog (the person must be mobile enough to travel independently)
- The person’s ability to travel safely, and, thus, whether or not the dog will be kept safe.
If the person is judged eligible to get a Guide Dog, further training is given for this. Beneficiaries are paired with a suitable Guide Dog, and are trained in how to work effectively in partnership with the Dog.
